At a time when many are mourning the demise of film and traditional photography techniques, an exhibition at this year's London Art Fair, Photo50, introduces a group of artists who are experimenting with analogue in new and unexpected ways...

Curated by Sue Steward, the exhibition brings together the work of 12 photographers who are all exploring different ways to present images, and who use playful techniques to achieve surprising results.

A number of them use photographic images as a starting point to create original pieces of art. "Many images in this exhibition were produced through analogue processes and reveal surprising similarities with their digital counterparts; many mingle the two," says Steward in the essay accompanying the show. "There is also the changing assumption that the photographic print is the finished object, the ultimate goal of production. But it is no longer necessarily the end-point; the printed paper is enduring transformation, partially destroyed or decorated, re-built to take on a new dimension – and becoming an original artwork in its own right."

Best Time Management App Ever. Yes these kinds of things excite me.
It tracks your usage on your computer, tells you how much time you spend on Illustrator/Excel/the Internet etc. It knows when you're active in a particular program. I've not used it for work yet, (or for less than 36 minutes) but it's bloody brilliant. You can put in goals such as time spend on Calendar/Email/Designing and it shows you how you're tracking and where you're overusing your time. I usually use the 'a time logger'/'eternity lite' apps for iPhone but this is so much better. Effortless.

Jony Ive to be Knighted

Apple's designer Jonathan Ive is to receive a knighthood in the New Year's Honours List. Ive has said that he is "both humbled and sincerely grateful" for the award.

Apple's senior vice president, industrial design, will receive the KBE for "services to design and enterprise". He had previously received the CBE.

Ive joined Apple in 1992, becoming head of industrial design in 1998, the year in which the original iMac (below) was launched. Ive's team went on to design the iPod, iPhone and iPad - a succession of beautiful, seductive products that are as intuitive to use as they are attractive to look at. But, at a time when designers are feeling grossly undervalued, it is to be hoped that Ive's knighthood will bring recognition for perhaps a more enduring contribution to his field – in demonstrating the importance of design to the success of business, or, indeed, any organisation.

HAPTIC INTELLIGENTSIA is a human 3D printing machine that allows the user to tactually perceive the virtual object and to directly transform it into the physical. The user can freely move the extruding gun, which is attached to a haptic interface. When the tip of the gun is moved into a surface region of the virtual object, the interface generates forces under computer control, allowing the user to feel and touch the surface of the object.

Without looking at the computer screen, the only way to visualize the virtual object is to pull the trigger and extrude the material along the feedback surface. The results are always unique and different, depending on how each user responds to the machine’s guidance. The sense of touch is no longer present in our current screen-based interface. HAPTIC INTELLIGENTSIA humanizes the 3D printing process, bringing the user a tactile relationship to the virtual object.

About Anna-Wili Highfield:
She is a Sydney based artist currently making sculptures of animals from paper and from copper pipe. The paper sculptures are created from archival cotton paper, that is painted, then sewn together, to create the figure of an animal. The copper pipe is bent and manipulated to create sculptural forms reminiscent of line drawings.

"There’s a DJ in the bedroom (**disclaimer as to how shit this sounds - SB **). And oh look, clothes on display in the closet. The appetizers are served in the kitchen, the drinks in the living room. But is it a hangout or a real home? It’s Casa Clementina, in the Monti district in Rome.

In the most ancient Roman quarter, the old Suburra, stands Casa Clementina, a space furnished with modern design objects (that you can purchase) and an atmosphere which is at the same time domestic and underground.

The mood is that of a real home. Apart from the rooms, you will find bed sheets, pots and pans, desks, sofas and salami hanging from the ceiling. For all lovers of open spaces there’s also a floral corridor, with synthetic grass, benches and an arbor with flowers."

Kouzaki Hiromu, Grandfather's Envelopes at Douglas Hyde.

Kouzaki Hiromu, the grandfather of the exhibition title, was born in 1902 in Japan. He learnt carpentry at the age of 15 and eventually became a master builder. As an elderly man of 80, partly to keep his hands busy, he began to make envelopes from used paper that he found around the house, and soon this activity took over his life. He made envelopes almost incessantly. When he died, at the age of 95, the family put paper into his coffin so he could go on producing them.

The envelopes, made from used and unwanted materials (in much the same way as the Japanese boro that were shown in Gallery 2 some years ago) are not artworks, but neither are they exactly everyday objects for use. What is most remarkable about them, apart from the silent, diligent, and obsessive manner in which they were made, is their wonderful simplicity and humility - qualities that are not much in evidence in our materialistic world.

Fujii Sakuko, Kouzaki Hiromu's granddaughter, was responsible for bringing these beautiful artifacts to public attention in Japan, where they have been exhibited on several occasions. She also produced a book about them, which will be for sale at our exhibition.
With warm thanks to Stephen Szczepanek, who introduced us to these wonderful objects, and to Fujii-san, who has so generously lent us a multitude of her grandfather's works of paper.

Raf to take the reins at Dior?

"Since John Galliano’s dismissal from Dior in March, the brand has had trouble finding a new head designer. Marc Jacobs reportedly refused the job, as did Azzadine Alaia, Alber Elbaz and Riccardo Tisci. But this week Women’s Wear Daily reported that Dior is closing in on a deal with the Belgian designer Raf Simons. Simons, who designs for Jil Sander, as well as for his own menswear label, is a surprising choice." Forbes.

Huh. The Raf I remember was a little more ... Mark Leckey esque?
He's done a good job at Jil Sander, and training Damir Doma (who cuts much better than he did early on). But Dior needs more of a Costumier than a Belgian Designer who caught the coat tails of Veronique Branquinho (ahem, yet was never part of the Antwerp 6) and built his reputation on subverting various youth cultures of the past (mainly from Germany and the UK so he never experienced them directly) and re-presenting them as catwalk fashion. He was doing menswear long before menswear went on the up, and was indeed pivotal. I always have props for Raf and think he is a talent. No doubting that. But he's not a Hedi (mainly, he knows fashion not just how to direct a good veneer on it - one that potentially is pivotal in the resurgance of an entire gender taking pride in - and buying - clothing again). Guess we'll see. It's a new Era.

I don't know what to make of it....it's v Freudenthal/Verhagen looking. Interesting, yes. Practical, no. Apparel, no. Not really sure what it is but some of the images are lovely. Interesting yet somehow I can't apply a function to it. Yet I'm still posting. I love the fucking with 2D/3D thing. Theres just 'something' here, even if I can't define it.

It’s amazing what can be done with some simple cloth, a photo camera, nails and a wall. Young stylist from Switzerland Stéphanie Baechler shows us just that with her project “Furnishing on Bodies”.

In the beginning the fabrics hanging from the wall were experimental installations. Then Stéphanie looked at them from another angle and took one, two, dozens of shots. She cut out the pictures taken, put them together in a graphic composition and printed it on textile.

The result is a series of concept dresses and kaleidoscopic capes of complex design, created however without the superfluous use of rolls and rolls of cloth. All Stéphanie needed was a new point of view on her work.

Isermann transforms the soaring trussedroof space by installing a standard off-the-shelf drop ceiling grid and five hundred custom translucent vacuum-formed styrene panels. Each modular unit is one of four variations of planes that tilt in or out in a configuration in which the divisions engage the ceiling grid in the overall patterning. Suspended below the vast skylight, the daylong transition from natural light to incandescent fixtures will backlight the panels and add another dimension to the panels’ orientation and repetition.

The Kiri wristwatch is the creation of one of Japan’s most notable industrial designers Masayuki Kurokawa. His minimalist aesthetic and respect for simple textures is fully pronounced in this piece. Kurokawa is known for taking the most undervalued materials and turning them into something exquisite. In this particular piece, a silicone bracelet is made to look beautiful. The dial is made from mineral glass.

Color Usage in the DS 19

Citroën wished to further advance the futuristic aura of the new DS via an advanced, fashion-forward color palette.

This was quite a departure for Citroën, heretofore known for their sombre colors. When the DS made its debut, its predecessor, the Traction Avant, was only available in greys, blues and black, and the recently-introduced 2CV was offered solely in a single shade of grey.

While enticing and unusual colors were becoming all the rage in the 1950’s, no other manufacturer employed them quite like Citroën. Their embrace of color went beyond a bold selection of pigments and fabrics, finding its fullest expression in the coordination and mixing of color.

Most DS models were a symphony of three major colors, the body, the roof and the interior fabric. The fiberglass roof was initially available in four paint finishes: black, pale aqua, ivory and aubergine (eggplant.) Later, the aqua and ivory were superseded by silver-grey and white. The less-expensive ID came with a white translucent roof, with no alternative color choices.

The original 1956 models produced a hint of what was to come with a vibrant green exterior color, Vert Printemps, and an available electric blue interior (Bleu Royal.) In 1957, Citroën further pushed the boundary with the introduction of Capucine, a sort of seafood red, reminiscent of shrimp or lobster. In the U.S., Edsel offered Rangers and Pacers in a similarly-hued Sunset Coral the following year. In the mid-1960′s, it reappeared in Italy as Rosso Salmone to great effect on the Lancia Fulvia Sport Zagato.

As a final flourish, in 1961 Ambre Doré (Golden Amber) and Absinthe were added to the color palette, which now encompassed 13 lower-body colors, five roof selections and seven interior choices.

The Perfect Car

One of the 20th century’s most gifted automotive designers, Flaminio Bertoni (1903-1964) was responsible for designing the bodywork of such classic – and stylistically diverse - cars as the elegant Traction Avant, supremely functional 2 CV and alluring DS 19.
Of all the totems of daily life that the French writer Roland Barthes celebrated in his book Mythologies, none moved him more than the Citroën DS 19, the car that his compatriots had nicknamed “the goddess”. “It is obvious that the new Citroën has fallen from the sky in as much as it appears at first sight as a superlative object,” he wrote. “The DS – the goddess – has all the features of one of those objects from another universe which have supplied fuel for the neomania of the eighteenth century and that of our own science fiction.”
Barthes was not alone in his admiration for the DS 19, which drew adoring crowds from the moment it was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motor Show. The ‘goddess’ was the product of years of research and development by Citroën’s extraordinarly gifted team of engineers led by the former Grand Priz champion André Lefèbvre and Bertoni.

IBM has released a reproduction of their 1960s Standard Issue Clock. Hand assembled in our Portland, Oregon factory, it's constructed with a spun steel case and domed glass lens. The dial features an original graphic treatment, circa 1947. Operated by a Quartz movement with a red, continuous sweep second hand. Includes one C battery and hanging hardware.

London Olympic Posters Revealed

A host of British artists, including Bridget Riley, Tracy Emin, Martin Creed, Rachel Whiteread, and Bob and Roberta Smith, have designed posters to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The posters were unveiled at Tate Britain in London along with the programme for the London 2012 Festival. The full list of contributing artists are Fiona Banner, Michael Craig-Martin, Martin Creed, Tracey Emin, Anthea Hamilton, Howard Hodgkin, Gary Hume, Sarah Morris, Chris Ofili, Bridget Riley, Bob and Roberta Smith, and Rachel Whiteread.

The series Broken houses is based on photographs of abandoned structures neglected by man and destroyed by the weather. The photos are found in the web while pursuing an amateur photographer from North Dakota who obsessively documents the decaying process of these houses. His photographs are used to create small scale models. Afterward, in the studio, the models are photographed again, omitted from their background and placed in gray.

Maruyama, photographer, chemical engineer, advertiser of international acclaim and an excellent connoisseur of the art of Chinese calligraphy, was born in Nagano, Japan, in 1968, and there he embarked upon his career as a photographer portraying the landscapes surrounding his birth town.   

In the 25 shots of the “Kusho” series, water and ink are on the verge of merging, when Shinichi's lens stops the exact fraction of a second which they meet, maintaining them intact and whole. A technique with a pictorial feel that recalls, with some transfer into photography, “drip painting” by the artist Jackson Pollock.  

The liquid sprays, already seen in various forms in a large number of advertising campaigns designed at his hand, interact in unique, unexpected and ephemeral ways, following the fluid and unpredictable instinct of his calligraphic gestures. Here, chemistry, physics and the wonder of chaos merge, directing the ephemeral poetry of Maruyama's photos.

What traits make a good business leader? Any that didn't come naturally to you that you've grown into?

A key trait of an effective business leader is the ability to be comfortable and timely in decision-making. It is frustrating to follow a leader who isn't able to set agendas and a clear direction. I believe that confidence in decision-making and good judgment really comes from experience. In my case, I was lucky enough to start at Meet the Press as an intern 20 years ago—so I was able to "grow up" in these surroundings, learn some tough lessons along the way, and eventually discover how to trust my instincts and have the confidence to make important decisions.

I think the longer I am in corporate environment the more I value decision-making. Clarity is hard to come by. It's something I constantly strive for. It's so hard when there are so many voices in one creative field. Addressing business needs is what it comes down to, but it's knowing what is and is not "brand right". Where to push, where to let go. Picking battles. I constantly strive to stay somewhere long enough to have this kind of clarity. WIP.
